Dream: to have a solar borehole & pump for agriculture in Makiwaru

A Sanya Juu resident, Eric Salema, has saved his village people from long commutes in search of water after reaching out to betPawa to support him in drilling a borehole for community use.

The project was chosen as part of the betPawa’s Dream Maker initiative. Dream Maker aims to help people realise their aspirations that are helpful to the wider community as part of giving back to society.

Salema, a 25-year old farmer and breeder said that water scarcity in his Makiwaru village had led to loss of livestock in some instances, as well as inconveniencing many women who are compelled to travel long distances in search of it.

At the request of Salema on behalf of his village, betPawa initiated the drilling of a 90-metre borehole at Makiwaru, which has an estimated 10,000 residents.

The borehole project includes an electricity-powered pump that will make it easy to distribute water to the area’s residents. The total cost was Tsh 24,360,000.

betPawa Regional Marketing Manager East Africa, Borah Ndanyungu lauded Salema for putting his community first.

“We are glad that he dared to dream and realise a better socio-economic future for his people through provision of sustainable water supply. betPawa is honoured to have worked with Salema to make this project a reality,” she said.

Ndanyungu was speaking in Sanya Juu, Kilimanjaro during the handover ceremony.

The Makiwaru project was one of the 20 dreams brought to life as part of the second season of betPawa’s Dream Maker initiative. Dream Maker was started in 2021 and has so far received over 15,000 proposals.

Testimony

Eric Salema: “Sometimes our livestock die due to lack of water. If we get water, it will help us grow vegetables and rear livestock without problems,” Salema stated in his Dream Maker proposal to betPawa.

Representative from the village

Ms. Adela Peter Kimaro: "We are grateful for betPawa Dream Maker for bringing this project to our community. We also extend our thanks to betPawa for solving the challenges faced by our villages, particularly for the women who previously had to travel long distances to fetch water."
